Medication Refill Instructions
For controlled medications prescribed by TruCare. Take exactly as prescribed.
Before calling TruCare about a refill
Call your pharmacy first.
Ask the pharmacy:
- Can my medication be filled?
- Does TruCare need to do anything?
If the pharmacy says TruCare needs to help, ask the pharmacy to contact TruCare directly.
You may also call TruCare to report the issue.
Do not wait until you are out of medication to ask about a refill.
TruCare does not control whether the pharmacy has your medication, whether insurance will pay for it, or when the pharmacy will let you pick it up.
If you have not called the pharmacy first, TruCare WILL ask you to call the pharmacy before sending the concern to the provider.
Medication use
Take your medication only as prescribed.
- Do not take extra pills.
- Do not take doses early.
- Do not increase your dose.
- Do not change when or how you take your medication.
- Do not use your medication for a new injury or pain, dental or surgery pain, or new flare-ups.
New pain or injury
A new pain problem does NOT change your prescription.
If you fall, get hurt, have surgery, go to the emergency room, or have a pain flare, do not take extra controlled medication from TruCare unless TruCare tells you to.
If you have an emergency, call 911 or go to the emergency room.
Early refills
Early refills are NOT provided.
Except at the provider's discretion.
TruCare does not routinely replace controlled medication that was taken early, lost, stolen, spilled, damaged, taken differently than prescribed, or used for a new pain problem.
Running out early does not mean an early refill will be given.
Running out early
Running out early is a medication safety concern!
It may lead to:
- a required visit
- pill count
- drug testing
- corrective notice
- treatment plan change
- tapering
- dose reduction
- or stopping controlled medication treatment.
Medication decisions
Front desk staff CANNOT approve early refills, extra medication, dose changes, medication changes, or replacement prescriptions. Front desk staff can take a message and send it to the provider when provider review is needed. The provider may review your chart, refill dates, medication agreement, Prescription Monitoring Program data, drug test results, pill counts, and clinic policy before making a decision. Controlled medication decisions are made by the provider, not the front desk.
Toxicology Monitoring Instructions
For patients receiving controlled medication from TruCare. Toxicology testing is part of medication-safety monitoring.
When testing may be required
- during a scheduled visit
- outside a routine visit when requested
- when additional monitoring is needed
- when a test result or other information raises a safety concern
Testing may include point-of-care urine testing, laboratory testing, or confirmatory testing.
What you need to do
- complete the test as instructed
- respond to monitoring requests
- keep working contact information on file
- give accurate information about your medications
- tell TruCare about controlled medications from other providers
- tell TruCare about alcohol, marijuana, kratom, delta products, or other substance use that may affect treatment safety
- follow collection instructions
- do not tamper with or interfere with testing
If you cannot complete required testing as instructed, contact TruCare promptly.
Results that need provider review
This may include:
- prescribed medication not present when expected
- medication or substances not reported to TruCare
- unexpected or inconsistent results
- suspected tampering or specimen concerns
- incomplete or refused testing
If testing raises a concern
Provider will review the concern before making decisions.
Depending on the concern, TruCare may require additional testing, a visit, increased monitoring, shorter prescribing intervals, medication changes, tapering, referral, or stopping controlled medication treatment.
An unexpected result does NOT automatically mean controlled medication will be stopped.
Toxicology results
Toxicology testing is used for medication safety, not punishment. Results may need confirmation or additional review before a final treatment decision is made.
Testing does not guarantee that controlled medication will be prescribed or continued.
Your Controlled Substance Agreement still applies.
